I am Dr. Richard N Ware, and this is my CTS story. At the tender age of 18, I entered into the U.S. Army and headed to Fort Knox KY for basic training. During the daily marching drills, I noticed my left hand would go numb carrying my rifle. Many times I would have to reach over with my right hand to hold the rifle until I got the feeling back into my hand. Also, while switched, the right hand would go numb too. Now, keep in mind that up until this point, I hadn’t done anything repetitive. I was a normal kid from the old school that never stayed indoors unless it was raining. I did just about everything physically possible as a healthy growing boy. Climb that tree or jump off of that garage? No problem. Baseball, football, swimming, skating, basketball and tag were activities my brother and friends did daily. I was also a 3 valve horn player of about 5 years who might have practiced 1 hour a day and my right hand operated the valves. Well, jump ahead some years just dealing with the numbness and among other diagnosis, being told I have arthritis, I lived with it. The mid-night wake-ups, numb with killing pain, were something I endured until the fall of 1992 when CTS was added to my vocabulary. By now, my right hand was worst than my left so, I had the full CTS operation on the right. When I say “full” that’s what I mean. In 1992 they did not have the simple, ½ inch cut and release that is so popular today. The doctor opened my carpal tunnel area with a 2 inch “L” shaped cut. This exposed the tunnel, the nerves, everything. He snipped the top of the tunnel to open the area and take the pressure off. He then went one step further. He removed the protective tissue surrounding each nerve. You see, it is the tissue that swells with body fluids putting pressure on the nerves thus cutting off the energy to the fingers causing numbness and if left unattended, pain. I know folks that have had the quick CTS fix which did not last. A year or two later they were having the same problem. Me? I haven’t had any problems since the 1992 operation. (You do the math) I never had the operation on my left hand. It was not as bad but still gets numb from time to time. That’s what led to the development of the WareCo Relief Pack. I put it on and within minutes the numbness is leaving. As for the accepted industry standard “repetitive injury” cause, don’t you believe it. I can de-bunk that personally. The actual cause that is explained by most chiropractors (my son being one) goes like this. At some time in your life, you used your hands to catch yourself while either tripping or falling. This jarred the bones in the wrist (carpal area) causing them to be out of alignment. Thus, causing nerve irritation and swelling of the tissue. Get the relief pack. It works.
